Ubuntu Youth Program

Ibrahim, a student in our Youth Program, shared this story (with a bit of help from Google Translate) in #English class about how he understood #ubuntu, which means in the Xhosa culture: I am because we are.

“I sat with my friends in the neighborhood. While we were talking, an old man came carrying a basket filled with delicious fruits. He told us I will do a competition for you and whoever wins will win fruits. He said, “I want you to run and whoever arrives first will win.” He raised his hand for us to start running. We held hands and ran all together, as if we were one row and we all reached the finish line together. The man was surprised by this act and said why did you run together when you could have won alone? One of us replied, “how can anyone be truly happy if everyone else is sad?”
